The goal of this study is to cast light on the karaoke market, a great unknown and plagued by some prejudices, pre-established beliefs and clichés, but on which unfortunately very few studies have been conducted, making feasible analysis based on real usage data scarce.
Thankfully, online karaoke services nowadays allow us to compile data from millions of real users and analyze it (always in anonymized form) to reach conclusions. This study was realized using data collected during the year 2015 by Red Karaoke across its different web and application-based (both mobile and smart TV) services.
Our analysis is based on the following data (fact sheet):
Total participating users: 4,815,773 active users in 2015
Hours of use: 1,546,288.4 (adding up to 176.5 years of uninterrupted use)
Available catalogue: 71,238 songs
Total plays: 9,290,443
Countries included in study: United States, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, France, Germany, China, Indonesia and Vietnam
The countries were selected based on the volume of collected data and the existence of a sufficiently large catalogue in the local language in order to ensure the relevance and reliability of data. In cases where not enough data was available from some of the countries for a certain piece of analysis, this country was left out of that part of the study.
During the next week we will publish the different parts of the study, including the following sections:
1. The global karaoke market
2. The most popular singing languages
3. The most popular genres to sing
4. The most popular karaoke songs by gender
5. The most popular karaoke songs of 2015
6. The most popular duets of 2015
7. The most popular Christmas songs and carols
